Join KSVT’s New Rural Youth Reporting Cohort

Young people are the experts on, well, exactly what it’s like to be a young person in Kentucky right now. Wherever you are and whatever school you attend, we want to share that expertise on our student-run publication, The New Edu.

KSVT is really excited to launch a rural youth reporting cohort, which is all about supporting young people in building journalism skills and telling stories. Young people don’t already have to be student journalists to do this work. No prior experience is required. Your curiosity, questions you have about what’s happening where you are, the conversations you have with your friends and neighbors—all that is part of reporting, and reporting is part of telling great stories.

In this cohort, members will meet virtually: We’ll go through workshops on everything from what journalism is to fact-checking, and brainstorm about issues impacting your community or school related to tech. We’ll practice interviewing and reporting skills, dig into research on issues you’re interested in, and publish your writing. 

Also, all members of this cohort will be paid a $500 stipend for completing all workshops and publishing two pieces. All our team members are paid! This work takes time and effort, and we want to compensate people for their work.

We know important stories aren’t only happening in big cities.

We’re lucky to have great local journalism in Kentucky, and we think we need even more of it, and more opportunities for students in rural areas to report on what’s happening where they are.
