Responding to the State's Motion to Dismiss
The state’s motion to dismiss is part of an unfortunate pattern by the General Assembly: shifting responsibility, ignoring reality, and downplaying the consequences of underfunding our schools.
Now a month after the Kentucky Student Voice Team sued the state for failing to fulfill their constitutional obligation to ensure every student receives a quality and equitable education, we have received a response from the Kentucky Attorney General: a motion to dismiss the lawsuit altogether and close the case before the evidence can even be heard.
The state’s motion to dismiss is part of an unfortunate pattern by the General Assembly: shifting responsibility, ignoring reality, and downplaying the consequences of underfunding our schools.
Our attorneys are preparing an official legal response, which we will file in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we want to be clear: Kentuckians deserve a meaningful discussion about the future of our public schools, not a motion that seeks to shut down this important conversation.
On Saturday, April 5, the Kentucky Student Voice Team will host our first Rose Revival Public Hearing as part of our statewide effort to uplift policy solutions to the allegations in our lawsuit. At this first hearing, students, educators, and community members will hear from expert witnesses about the challenges and solutions for improving civics education in Kentucky. Kentucky Student Voice Team student examiners will lead the questioning, and attendees will have opportunities to participate in a Q&A.
