On May 13th, 2025, members of the Kentucky Student Voice Team (KSVT) took to the Kentucky Court of Appeals located in Frankfort, KY for a hearing focused on motions to dismiss a lawsuit, Kentucky Student Voice Team v. Commonwealth of Kentucky, that alleges that the state has not fulfilled its constitutional obligation to provide a quality, equitable public education to all Kentucky students. From 10:00 to 11:30, families, plaintiffs, and supporters packed the courtroom of Judge Phillip Shepherd as he heard arguments from both the Attorney General’s office and the attorney representing KSVT. Ultimately, Judge Shepherd asked for both sides to submit an additional brief within 30 days, and reconvene at a later date that is yet to be specified. Following the hearing, KSVT members spoke at a press event and asserted their rights as students to fight for a more equitable system of public education. These photos and illustrations capture what happened that day.
